 About Cranium Training

Afrikaans - Alle "Fun Science' klasse word tweetalig
(in Afrikaans en Engels) aangebied.

Die webblad is egter tans slegs in Engels.

Fun Science

  • The experiments and the concepts discussed are not related to a specific grade or syllabus.

  • Currently, the classes are divided into 2 groups: Junior and Senior

  • Take a look at the Fun Science page for more detail on the different groups

  • There are no tests or exams - any learner with an interest in science is welcome to come and have some fun, while getting to know stuff.

Extra classes

The extra classes started after many requests by parents. I started with IGCSE Mathematics, but it has now expanded to CAPS Maths and Physical Science (Afrikaans and English) from Grade 7 to Grade 12, Maths-U-See on different levels, and The Good and the Beautiful Chemistry (Gr 5-7).

These classes are face-to-face at Cranium Training, but also online from the studio.

Background

In 2021 Craniuim Training started with Science classes in the morning, focusing mainly on the Home School Learners. We had lots of fun and spend many hours investigating and exploring Science concepts. In 2022 additional classes were added in the morning, to cater for new home school learners, while the 2021-groups are getting new lessons.

AFTERNOON classes are also added for regular school learners.

Why did I start?

If you learn something, there is always the possibility that you can forget it - but if you UNDERSTAND a concept, you are likely to have the ability to always figure it out. This has always been my philosophy about teaching. Unfortunately, the pressure of over-loaded syllabi and other prescriptions make it difficult for many teachers to give learners the opportunity to understand the concepts through investigative experiments and hands-on discovery.
This is why Cranium Training was started. Inquiry-based teaching has one main question: WHY? Once you understand WHY you have very little to learn. Knowing why also helps learners in later grades when they come across new work built on the knowledge of well-understood concepts.
Give your child a head-start with science - help your child become the one in the class that "
knows stuff".

About Me

I am a passionate Maths and Science teacher who believes that all kids deserve a chance to experience the beauty of Maths and Science through practical experiences and meaningful discussions.

My Story

I started off as a Maths and Science teacher at Fichardtpark High School in Bloemfontein when the school itself was just getting starting.

I then spent time at the Free State Education Department where I was fortunate to be exposed to computer-assisted learning and alternate methodologies in education. During this time I spent 6 weeks in the UK and USA to see how computers were used in education, and this experience changed my life.

After a 16 year stint in the private sector in Pretoria, I returned to Bloemfontein to take up a position at the University of the Free State managing intervention programs in previously disadvantaged schools, focusing on improving education including Mathematics and Science.
I also had the opportunity to accompany several mathematics olympiad teams as leader or deputy leader (3x Hong Kong, 1x China, 1x India, 1x Durban).

I believe that Maths and Science are not the difficult subjects they are made out to be. Focusing on LEARNING, not TEACHING, focusing on UNDERSTANDING, not MEMORISING, focusing on FUN, not WORK can make everyone succeed.
